Vanuatu is roughly 6,800 km from Singapore — close enough to be a serious Pacific destination for SG-based families, far enough to require careful routing. As of 2026 there are no direct commercial flights between Singapore and Port Vila. This guide covers every realistic route and how to make the trip feel like one leg, not three.
The commercial routing options
Option 1: Singapore → Brisbane → Port Vila (recommended)
The cleanest commercial option. Singapore Airlines or Qantas SIN → BNE (~8h non-stop), then Virgin Australia or Air Vanuatu BNE → VLI (~3h). Combined flying time around 11h; total travel time 14–18h with layover. Brisbane is the most reliable connection point — multiple daily VLI departures, less weather disruption than Sydney, and easy First Class lounges at SIA and Qantas.
Option 2: Singapore → Sydney → Port Vila
Similar flying time, but Sydney’s VLI departures are less frequent and weather-affected more often. Better choice if you want to spend a Sydney night between legs.
Option 3: Singapore → Auckland → Port Vila
Air New Zealand SIN → AKL (~10h) + AKL → VLI (~3h). Total ~16h flying. Less convenient unless you’re combining a NZ stopover for business or leisure.
Option 4: Singapore → Fiji → Port Vila
SIA codeshares with Fiji Airways for SIN → NAN, then Fiji Airways NAN → VLI. Useful if combining Fiji + Vanuatu in one trip. Total ~17h.
Private aviation: Singapore → Port Vila direct
For UHNW travellers and family groups of 4+, private aviation is often the more cost-effective option once you factor in time, lounge time, and the cost of three or four First Class commercial fares. A Global 5500 or G650 from Seletar to Bauerfield Airport (Port Vila) routes via Brisbane for fuel — total block time around 12–13h. Estimated charter cost USD 220,000–360,000 round trip depending on aircraft and turnaround time. QOM coordinates charter selection with Singapore- and Brisbane-based operators including VistaJet, Jet Aviation and ExecuJet.
Layover strategy
The 14–18h commercial route works best when you treat the layover as a feature, not a problem:
- Short layover (3–5h): stay airside, use the SQ KrisFlyer Lounge in SIN and the Qantas Business Lounge in BNE
- Mid layover (8–12h): spend the day in Brisbane CBD — South Bank, Story Bridge, dinner at Otto Ristorante
- Long layover (overnight): stay at The Calile Hotel or W Brisbane, fly to VLI the next morning fresh
Visa and entry
Singapore passport holders receive a 30-day visa on arrival at Bauerfield Airport — free of charge, no advance application needed. Bring passport (6+ months validity), return ticket, and proof of onward accommodation. Vanuatu CBI passport holders also receive visa-free entry at home.
What to pack
Vanuatu is tropical year-round (24–32°C). Pack as you would for Bali — light layers, reef-safe sunscreen, mosquito repellent (resort-strength), light rain shell for the wet season. Most luxury resorts provide reef shoes, snorkelling gear and beach essentials, so over-packing on water sports kit isn’t necessary.
Connectivity
Local SIM via Digicel or Vodafone Vanuatu — both offer affordable tourist data packs at the airport. Singtel ReadyRoam covers Vanuatu but at higher cost. Most luxury resorts on Efate have solid Wi-Fi; smaller properties on outer islands (Santo, Tanna) range from “fine for messaging” to “intentionally rustic.”
Money
The Vatu (VUV) is the local currency. SGD doesn’t exchange easily — bring USD or AUD for change, or use ATMs in Port Vila. Major resorts accept Visa and Mastercard; high-end concierge transactions often invoiced in USD or AUD.
Recommended first-trip itinerary (7 nights)
- Nights 1–2: Iririki Island Resort, Port Vila — short ferry from town, ease into the time zone
- Nights 3–5: Ratua Private Island (helicopter transfer from VLI) — full immersion in private-island Vanuatu
- Nights 6–7: Espiritu Santo (Aore Island Resort or The Beachfront) — Blue Holes, Million Dollar Point, the big sky
